A man has sparked widespread discussion online after claiming that his wife of 21 years asked for a divorce just two weeks after he completed treatment for cancer.
According to the account, which was shared on a relationship forum and later reposted across social media, the marriage reportedly broke down shortly after he recovered from the life-threatening illness and began rebuilding his life.
The man said his wife informed him that she no longer wanted to remain in the marriage because she did not wish to take on the long-term responsibilities of caring for a partner who might continue to face health challenges.
Recalling the moment, he wrote:
“My wife asked for a divorce two weeks after I beat cancer. Her exact words were: ‘I didn’t sign up to be someone’s caretaker forever.’”
He explained that the statement left him questioning the strength of a relationship that had lasted more than two decades and survived numerous personal and family challenges.
According to him, while undergoing treatment, he had quietly reviewed his financial affairs and sought legal advice about his future.
He revealed:
“What she didn’t know was that during treatment, I quietly changed my will, separated my finances and documented every asset we owned. So while she was planning her new life, my lawyer was preparing mine.”
The man added that by the time the divorce was finalized, he felt more relieved than bitter, believing the experience had exposed realities about the relationship that he had not previously recognized.
The story has reignited conversations about commitment, caregiving expectations, and the responsibilities that come with long-term marriage during periods of serious illness.
Online reactions have been divided. While many people argued that spouses have a moral obligation to support one another through health crises, others pointed to the emotional, psychological, and financial pressures that prolonged illness can place on relationships.
As the story continues to circulate, it has prompted renewed debate about loyalty, sacrifice, and the challenges couples face when serious health issues become part of a marriage.
