First-Class FUTA Graduate Receives Surprising Job Rejection From Lagos Clinic

A first-class graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has gone viral after sharing the unexpected response she received following a job application to a clinic in Lagos.

The story surfaced after an X user, @_raesparkles, posted a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation involving her friend, who had applied for a position at the clinic while seeking an opportunity to relocate to Lagos.

According to the post, the applicant, identified as Linda Omotayo Aisida, graduated with a first-class degree in Physiology from FUTA on November 12, 2024.

Rather than proceeding with the recruitment process, the clinic reportedly sent a polite message declining her application.

The message read:

“Hey Linda. First class hons? There is something better for you. Please don’t lower your standard. All the best.”

The unusual response quickly sparked widespread discussion online, with many social media users debating whether the clinic’s decision was a compliment, an act of honesty, or an unfair assumption about the applicant’s career goals.

Reactions

Some users praised the clinic for being sincere, arguing that a first-class graduate may be better suited for more competitive opportunities.

Others criticized the response, noting that employers should allow applicants to decide what jobs align with their career aspirations.

A number of commenters pointed out that Nigeria’s challenging job market often forces graduates, regardless of academic performance, to accept available opportunities while pursuing bigger goals.

Some also questioned whether academic excellence should automatically disqualify someone from entry-level or modest-paying roles.

The exchange has continued to generate mixed reactions, with many Nigerians sharing their views on employment realities, career expectations, and the value placed on academic achievements in today’s job market.
