A Nigerian man has revealed why he and other tenants refused to open their compound gate for their landlord after the landlord returned home late at night.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man, identified as @TheMrBachelor, explained that the landlord had always enforced a strict rule of locking the gate by 9:30 p.m., with no exceptions for anyone.
According to him, the landlord and his family went out for an outing but failed to return before the gate-closing time. When the landlord eventually got home, he reportedly called one of the tenants to open the gate, but the tenants declined.
Sharing the incident, he wrote:
“Na there he go sleep this night! Or make he go back to where he is coming from too.”
The post has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many debating whether the tenants were justified in treating the landlord the same way he had treated them.
Reactions from netizens
Precious: “He should also abide by his rules. Let him have a taste of his own medicine.”
Sir DTC: “The gate is just a gate. But the lesson here is forever. How you treat people when you hold the keys determines how they treat you when you’re locked out. Build systems with grace, or be prepared to sleep in your car.”
Tommy Pips: “If na me be the landlord, I will wait for one week before I remove my roof. Two weeks later, I will remove all doors and windows.”
Favour: “People don’t just copy rules, they copy how those rules made them feel. Today’s reaction is less about the gate and more about accumulated resentment finally finding an opportunity.”
