A Nigerian woman has stirred online debate after stepping down from a friend’s bridal train, saying the cost of participation had become unrealistic for her current financial situation.
She said the bride initially invited her excitedly as an asoebi girl for a June wedding, but the outfit package alone was priced at ₦200,000 with gele and ₦150,000 without. After adding tailoring, shoes, makeup, and other expected expenses, she estimated the total could exceed ₦250,000.
The situation escalated further when members of the bridal group were reportedly asked to contribute ₦50,000 each toward a gift for the bride. At that point, she said she opted out of the train.
According to her, she informed the bride that she could no longer participate but still intended to attend the wedding as a guest.
However, she alleged the bride reacted with a mocking comment about her finances, referencing “Elon Musk payments” in a sarcastic jab at her ability to afford the costs.
The story has since triggered mixed reactions online, with many users questioning the rising financial expectations tied to weddings, especially asoebi culture, which some say is becoming exclusionary rather than celebratory.
Reactions have largely split between those who feel bridal train participation should be optional and affordable, and others who argue that being part of a bridal squad naturally comes with significant financial commitment.
