RCCG, X User Clash Over Adeboye’s Role in National Issues

A social media exchange between the leadership of the (RCCG) and an X user identified as M.E. Bello has sparked discussion online amid ongoing concerns about insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria.

The debate emerged after renewed scrutiny of the role of religious leaders in addressing national challenges. Some Nigerians questioned why RCCG General Overseer, , was seen participating in public activities during the administration of former President , while largely calling for prayers under the government of President .

Responding to the criticism, RCCG shared old video clips on social media, insisting that Adeboye did not participate in any protest against Jonathan’s administration. According to the church, the event referenced by critics was a prayer walk rather than a protest.

Reacting to the post, Bello argued that the gathering took place at the RCCG Redemption Camp. The church, however, disputed the claim, stating that the prayer walk was held in Ebute Metta, Lagos.

Bello then challenged the church’s position, writing: “Now that I have your attention, church social media handler; Has the G.O grown too old now to lead another protest or it’s just table manners?”

RCCG replied: “An 84-year-old man should go lead a protest for your own future?….You are not ready.”

In a further response, Bello accused the church leader of contributing to voter apathy through some of his public comments.

“Well said then! Kindly, help advise our amiable father-in-the-Lord to stop creating apathy!

“Last election, he said God had not told him there would be an election. This one again, he’s said to have said that the same God has chosen who will win. That is creating voter apathy,” he wrote.

The exchange has since generated reactions on social media, with users divided over the expectations placed on religious leaders regarding political participation and national advocacy.
