Nigerian Man Loses Over ₦1 Million in “Oyinbo Woman” Online Romance Scam

A Nigerian man has reportedly been left devastated after allegedly losing more than ₦1 million to an online scam involving someone he believed was a foreign woman.

According to a story shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man had been communicating with the supposed “Oyinbo woman” for about four months, during which he became emotionally invested and began making serious relocation plans.

As their conversations progressed, he reportedly became convinced that the woman was genuine and even told friends and neighbors that she would soon visit Nigeria.

“My neighbor just got scammed. He’s been chatting with an ‘Oyinbo woman’ for about four months. At some point, he was already preparing to Japa. International passport ready. Confidence high. He kept telling everyone, ‘She’s coming to Nigeria soon.’”

Reports indicate that things took a tragic turn when the woman allegedly requested access to his Nigerian bank account for what she described as urgent financial transactions before arriving in the country.

Believing he was helping someone he trusted, the man allegedly handed over his OPay login credentials without suspicion.

By the following morning, however, over ₦1 million had reportedly vanished from his account.

Without hesitation, he gave her his OPay login details. His thinking was simple: ‘If she lands, she won’t be stranded.’ He woke up the next morning, over ₦1 million gone.”

After discovering the loss, he reportedly attempted to contact the woman but found himself blocked on their usual messaging platform.

Further investigation into the transaction history allegedly revealed a shocking twist — the recipient account reportedly belonged to a Yoruba man, not the foreign lover he believed he had been speaking with.

“He tried reaching her, but he was blocked. Out of curiosity, he traced the account activity and a Yoruba man’s name appeared. That’s when reality fully landed.”

The heartbreaking incident reportedly left him sitting with his international passport, forced to confront the painful reality that his dreams of relocating abroad had been built on deception.

Social Media Reactions

The story quickly went viral, with many Nigerians reacting with a mix of sympathy, humor, and caution:

“Love made him release login details? This country will humble you.”

“Even OPay details? That’s not love, that’s advanced trust issues.”

“Scammers are evolving daily. People need to wise up.”

“Passport ready, village people laughing.”

“This is why you should never mix romance with banking.”
