New Mother Reportedly Collapses While Cooking Days After Caesarean Section, Sparks Debate on Postpartum Care

A woman has narrated how her friend was rushed back to hospital after collapsing while cooking just days after undergoing a Caesarean section at a teaching hospital in Nigeria.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the new mother was discharged and returned home to continue her recovery.

According to the account, the woman had barely settled in when her mother-in-law arrived for omugwo and immediately expressed concerns about food preparation despite the patient’s fragile condition.

The situation reportedly escalated when the recovering mother attempted to meet household expectations.

“My friend had just been discharged and came home weak from the C-section,” the witness said.

“The moment she entered the house, her mother-in-law said she had been starving and told her to go and find something for everyone to eat.”

She added that the pressure to resume domestic duties came too soon after surgery.

“She was still clearly weak, but she quietly went into the kitchen to cook because she didn’t want issues,” the witness explained.

According to the account, the woman later collapsed while preparing the meal and had to be rushed back to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

The story has since generated discussions on social media about postpartum recovery, family support, and the expectations placed on women following childbirth, particularly after major surgical procedures such as Caesarean sections.

Reactions

Many users criticised the alleged lack of consideration shown toward a woman recovering from surgery, arguing that rest and proper care should take priority after childbirth.

Others stressed that family members involved in omugwo should focus on supporting new mothers rather than increasing their workload.

Some commenters noted that Caesarean sections are major abdominal surgeries and questioned why anyone recovering from such a procedure would be expected to cook for an entire household.

A few users called for greater public awareness about postpartum health and the physical limitations many women face in the weeks following delivery.
