EFCC re-arrests skit maker Adeherself over allegations of fraud

The EFCC charged the skit creator with possessing false documents on one count in July 2020 at the special Offense Court in Ikeja, Lagos.

Adedamola Rukayat, better known as Adeherself, a popular Nigerian influencer and skit creator, has rejoined the EFCC network.

The skit creator was charged by the EFCC in July 2020 with one count of possessing false documents at the special Offense Court in Ikeja, Lagos, and was granted bail the same month.

The EFCC claimed that the defendant attempted to steal $6,000 from a man named Joseph Rumoro under the guise that the money was needed to pay his taxes and obtain his passport and visa. The other two defendants, Lasisi Adeleke and Sodiq Adeleke, are still at large.

The commission further claimed that she kept N7.9 million in cybercrime proceeds in her bank account.

Sections 8(a) and 1(3), 8(b) and 1(3), and 17(a) and (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences, 2006 are violated by the alleged offenses.

The EFCC, however, re-arrested the skit creator on Wednesday for an alleged N7.9 million internet fraud.

EFCC Lagos spokesman Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the skit maker was arraigned on Wednesday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), she was charged with three counts of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretenses, attempt to obtain money by false pretenses, and retention of proceeds of criminal conduct, along with two others still at large.

She, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Samuel Daji, counsel for the EFCC, informed the court that the case had been reassigned and urged it to remand the defendant pending the start of the trial.

He argued that the case was now before the court and that the defense needed to file a proper bail application.

He said, “My lord, this case was heard before Justice Sherifat Solebo before she retired, and when it was transferred to this honorable court, I informed my learned friend that the case would be coming up on Jan. 25. He said he thought it was the day before.

“This is a matter that is starting, your lordship, and we do not know if the sureties, who stood for her earlier, are dead or not.

“It is proper for the defense to apply afresh for bail before your lordship.”

Kassim Molade, the defendant’s defense counsel, asked the court to keep the bail granted by Solebo pending the filing of a new bail application.

According to him, the defendant has not been absent from court and is ready to stand trial.

“We passionately urge your lordship to allow the defendant (Adeherself) to continue to enjoy the bail given to her by the sister court. The reason we were not here on January 25 is that the prosecution did not get back to me.”

“I assure your lordship that before the close of today, I will rush to the sister court to get a copy of the ruling on the bail application,” he said.
