J.J. Omojuwa denies business loan to man who spent N1.7M on wedding

Media personality J.J. Omojuwa talks about meeting a man who demanded a ₦300,000 loan to launch a business following an extravagant wedding.

Omojuwa turned down the request after learning of the man’s financial choices during their chat in a post that was posted on the X platform.

Omojuwa inquired in his post about the man’s wedding expenses, which were incurred the year before. The man acknowledged spending ₦1.7 million on the ceremony, even though he was paid a fixed ₦720,000 a year.

“Someone comes to me, wants to loan ₦300k to set up his wife for a POS business. Ok. Sounds good. I ask, how much did it cost you to do your wedding last year? He said ₦1.7m. Ok. How much do you earn per year? ₦720k/year fixed. Cool. So you used your salary for over 2 years to do your wedding ceremony?” Omojuwa wrote.

When the man justified his decision by stating that it was customary in his village, Omojuwa responded pointedly, asking, “The people that don’t have the money, didn’t do it, and are married, where are they buried?”

The man reportedly fell silent, and Omojuwa concluded his post by remarking, “You see, you are trying to punish me for your irresponsibility. Poverty is sometimes self-explanatory.”

Numerous users have since engaged in a contentious online discussion about the social pressures associated with extravagant weddings and the financial burden they can cause on people.

See Reactions Below…

@AdeHardemola: This is still inconclusive JJ, Did you still borrow him the 300k out of your magnanimity after the reality pet talk?
That is the final episode.

@seunosewa: Being poor doesn’t reduce our need to have nice experiences.

Life can be unbearably depressing for most people if all they do is work and save. The wedding is a highlight of their lives.

Punishing you ke? He is giving you an opportunity to be blessed. 😃

@Alpha_Femalee: What happened to NO, I cannot give or YES, I’ll give . All these jamb questions untop 300k? God abeg

@donearlylife: That’s if he did not borrow a good amount for the wedding

Reckless spending

@Engr_Ashile: It’s either peer pressure or low self esteem that pushed him to spend 1.7m for wedding

@salim_dakingari: Priorities are everything

This is a classic case of societal pressure dictating financial choices… leaving long-term consequences for short-term appearances

It’s not about the wedding… it’s about the marriage and the life after

Tough lessons… but necessary ones

@TheRoyalHerbs: I told my wife, I don’t have anyone to support my wedding.

I will only do proper introduction and pay your bride price. If you no gree find man that will do elaborate wedding na herb I dey sell✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

@ifeanyiii_o: 1.7million is extremely decent considering the price of basic things in the country now. I understand your standpoint and all. basically if you want to help a person just do so for the sake of God and humanity
