From Garri Struggles to U.S. Professor: Nigerian Man Shares Story of Kindness Repaid

A Nigerian man has shared a deeply emotional story of resilience, friendship, and the lasting impact of kindness, recounting how his former university hostel mate rose from extreme hardship to become a professor in the United States.

In a post shared on X, the man, @DurojaiyeSegun, reflected on their days at Ekiti State University, where his friend faced severe financial challenges and often survived on garri.

According to him, the friend’s parents endured months of hardship, sometimes going without food just to gather about ₦50,000 for tuition fees. During that period, he would intentionally leave a bowl of garri outside his door, knowing his friend would come knocking for food. At one point, the frequent consumption of garri even affected his friend’s health.

Years later, that same struggling student has risen to become a Professor of Physics at Arkansas State University in the United States.

Reaching out from abroad, the professor fondly recalled the small but meaningful acts of kindness he received—ranging from shared meals and transport fare to academic support during difficult times.

He also remembered a particularly selfless gesture, where his friend reportedly used his own tuition fees to cover his medical bills, even going as far as deceiving his mother to secure another payment.

Touched by these memories, the now-successful professor sent ₦500,000 as a token of appreciation, describing it as money “to buy some green bottles,” while emphasizing that it was only a small part of what he has done in recent times.

The story has since resonated widely online, serving as a powerful reminder that genuine kindness often comes full circle—even if it takes years.
