Woman Allegedly Fakes Wedding, Collects Workplace Marriage Gift Before Resigning

A social media user on X (formerly Twitter) has shared a startling account of how a woman allegedly staged a fake wedding in order to receive financial gifts from her workplace before resigning from her job.

According to the post, employees at the organisation had a longstanding tradition of supporting colleagues who were preparing to get married. Under the arrangement, management reportedly provides ₦100,000, while staff members contribute an additional ₦50,000.

The story, shared by a user who claimed the woman was a colleague of his sister, stated that she had worked at the company for several years and was well aware of the wedding-support policy.

The woman was said to have recently secured a new job in another state and was planning to leave the organisation. Before her departure, she allegedly printed a fake wedding invitation card and presented it to her manager, triggering the company’s usual support process.

As a result, colleagues reportedly contributed towards what they believed was her upcoming wedding, while management approved the standard financial gift.

The post claimed that the ₦150,000 was released to her a week before the supposed ceremony, in line with company practice aimed at helping employees prepare for wedding expenses.

However, shortly after receiving the money, she allegedly submitted her resignation and left the organisation.

In a further twist, the woman was said to have privately informed a colleague a day before the scheduled wedding date that the event had never existed. According to the account, she justified her actions by arguing that she had spent years contributing to other employees’ weddings and was simply taking back what she believed she had invested over time.

The claim has since generated debate online, with many users divided over whether her actions amounted to fraud or a creative way of reclaiming money she had previously contributed to workplace celebrations.

Social Media Reactions

She contributed to people’s weddings for years. She simply collected her own share before leaving.”

“If the company policy wasn’t properly verified, that’s on management.”

“At least she didn’t take millions, she only recovered what she had spent on others.”

Critical Reactions

This is outright fraud. She obtained money through deception.”

“Contributing to others voluntarily doesn’t give anyone the right to lie and collect funds.”

“If everyone did this, workplace trust would completely disappear.

Neutral Reactions

The real issue is why the company releases wedding funds before confirming the event.”

“Both sides have a point. She may have felt entitled to the money, but the method was questionable.”

“This story shows how informal workplace welfare schemes can be abused if there are no checks in place.”
