UITH national nurses and midwives association condemns doctor’s assault

The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, on Thursday, condemned the assault on one of its members and a doctor last Tuesday by three bereaved relatives of a patient named Alhaji Saliu, who passed away at the hospital as a result of blood cancer.

In a statement issued in Ilorin and inked by its Chairman, Kazeem Afolabi Ayinla, the association issued a warning that it would no longer put up with such violent assaults on any of its members.

Such barbaric acts against any of its members or other hospital employees “must stop,” the organization declared.

While the association’s leadership expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family, Ayinla said it was wrong for anyone to behave in such a way.

He urged the facility’s management to improve its security system to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Remember that three relatives of Alhaji Salihu, a butcher who passed away on Tuesday at the hospital, reportedly assaulted a nurse and a doctor while they were on duty in the UITH’s accident and emergency (A&E) wing after what they claimed was a careless attitude on the part of medical personnel caused their relative’s death.

Heavy equipment was reportedly thrown twice at a nurse who was on duty during the attack, but thanks to her alertness, she avoided them both times.

The nurse reportedly fled for her life as the equipment allegedly sustained damage.

The family of the deceased’s relative was forced to submit a written apology to the NANNM UITH Chapter leadership for the incident.
