A woman has recalled how a teenage boy in her neighbourhood reportedly won ₦16 million from sports betting at the age of 15, an event that stunned residents and changed his family’s fortunes in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to her account, the boy’s mother, who traded in garri, had given him ₦3,000 to deliver a customer’s order.
Rather than complete the errand, the teenager allegedly used the money to place a sports bet — a decision that unexpectedly paid off.
Recounting the incident, the woman described the dramatic moment the winning result was confirmed.
“The moment he realised he had won, he ran to the front of their house screaming. Out of excitement, he scattered his mum’s garri everywhere, and the whole neighbourhood came out to see what was happening.”
She added that the size of the jackpot initially left the family in shock.
“When his father heard the amount — ₦16 million — he almost had a heart attack.”
According to her, disbelief soon turned into celebration as news of the win spread throughout the area.
The woman said the family relocated shortly afterward.
“Not long after, they moved out of our area to a better neighbourhood.”
She further claimed that the boy’s mother used the financial boost to expand her business and now owns one of the largest garri stores in Port Harcourt.
The story has reignited discussions about underage participation in sports betting, a subject that previously generated debate following reports of teenagers gaining access to gambling platforms despite age restrictions.
While some Nigerians have described the incident as a rare stroke of luck, others argue that it highlights the dangers of exposing young people to gambling and the false impression that betting is a reliable path to wealth.
