Social Media Reactions Trail Honour Oriretan’s Criticism of VDM Over NGO Funds

Social media commentator Honour Oriretan has sparked debate online after publicly questioning the management of funds belonging to the NGO associated with activist VeryDarkMan.

In a lengthy social media post, Oriretan alleged that the NGO’s funds had reduced significantly from ₦325 million to ₦60 million and demanded an explanation regarding the reported difference. He questioned how the funds were managed and called for greater transparency and accountability from the organisation.

The commentator also claimed that projects publicly associated with the initiative were sponsored by others, particularly musician Burna Boy, and argued that the NGO should provide a clearer breakdown of its expenditures.

Oriretan further accused VDM of applying different standards to himself than those he demands from public figures and institutions he frequently criticises. According to him, if similar allegations were directed at another individual, VDM would have been among the first to demand investigations and public accountability.

The post also contained sarcastic remarks about a previous ₦100 donation Oriretan said he made to the NGO, jokingly suggesting that the contribution coincided with changes in VDM’s lifestyle, including increased travel and improved living conditions.

Concluding his statement, Oriretan issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding that VDM account for the alleged ₦265 million discrepancy and address concerns surrounding the NGO’s finances.

Reactions Online

The comments have generated mixed reactions across social media. While some users echoed calls for financial transparency and proper accounting of donor funds, others argued that allegations should be supported by verified financial records before conclusions are drawn.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no publicly verified evidence presented by Oriretan proving that funds were misappropriated, and VDM had not issued a fresh response specifically addressing the latest allegations.

The controversy continues to fuel discussions about accountability, transparency, and public trust in crowdfunding and non-governmental initiatives.
