Reactions as Honour Oriretan Criticises Mark Angel’s Wedding Timing

Social media commentator Honour Oriretan has sparked debate after criticising comedian Mark Angel for holding his wedding amid growing concerns over insecurity and kidnappings in Nigeria.

Oriretan argued that public figures should be sensitive to the national mood and show solidarity with victims of insecurity rather than engage in major celebrations during such periods. He went as far as demanding that Mark Angel apologise and declare the wedding invalid until the kidnapped children and teachers are released.

However, the remarks have generated mixed reactions online. While some people agree that celebrities should use their platforms to draw attention to national tragedies, others believe it is unreasonable to expect individuals to suspend major life events because of challenges facing the country.

Many commenters pointed out that insecurity has unfortunately become a long-standing issue in Nigeria, and if citizens waited for every national problem to be resolved before celebrating personal milestones, weddings, birthdays, graduations and other important events might never take place.

Others also questioned Oriretan’s demand that the comedian invalidate his marriage, describing it as excessive and unrealistic. According to this view, showing concern for victims and celebrating a personal achievement are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

The controversy highlights a broader conversation about the responsibilities of public figures during times of national hardship. While empathy and support for victims are widely encouraged, opinions remain divided on whether personal celebrations should be postponed because of events beyond an individual’s control.

Reactions

“People can pray for victims and still celebrate their own lives. The two are not mutually exclusive.”

“Celebrities should use their influence to raise awareness, but asking someone to cancel a wedding is extreme.”

“Nigeria faces challenges almost every day. Should everyone put their lives on hold indefinitely?”

“Public figures need empathy, but personal milestones shouldn’t become public property.”

“The focus should be on solving insecurity, not policing who gets married and when.”
