Pregnant Nigerian Woman Sparks Debate Over Husband’s Financial Support to Families

A Nigerian woman has stirred heated reactions online after opening up about a financial disagreement with her husband just six months into their marriage.

The pregnant woman, who revealed that she is currently unemployed and expecting her first child, expressed frustration over what she described as an imbalance in how her husband supports both families financially.

According to her, her husband earns ₦280,000 monthly and allegedly sends ₦80,000 every month to his parents and siblings, while giving her ₦150,000 for household expenses and personal upkeep.

However, she said he has never financially supported her own parents or siblings since they got married.

Sharing her concerns in a post on X, she wrote:

“I’m married and pregnant with my first baby. I’m not working. Hubby is earning 280k monthly. He gives his parents and siblings 80k monthly.

Gives me 150k but has never given my parents or siblings money for 6 months that we have been married.

I told him we need to be rotating it. At least give your parents this month and give mine next month. He said no. If I want to give my parents, I should do that from 150k he gives me.

Things are costly. The 150k isn’t even enough and he’s saying I should take from it.”

The post quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions from social media users.

While some people defended the husband, arguing that the ₦150,000 he gives his wife already represents a large portion of his salary, others insisted that marriage should involve equal consideration for both families.

Several commenters also pointed to Nigeria’s current economic realities, noting that managing feeding, transport, healthcare, rent, and family obligations on a ₦280,000 salary could already be financially difficult.

Others argued that since the woman is pregnant and unemployed, her husband should be more understanding if she wishes to occasionally support her own family as well.

The conversation has since sparked wider debates online about financial responsibilities in marriage, boundaries with extended families, and the pressures many young couples face in today’s economy.
