Everyone plays the games of life according to their innate or learned skills. There is never a particular formula to winning. Peter Obi spends his time modeling the values of character, competence and compassion which form the mantra of his political campaigns. He continues to put himself in the face of the people as the man who can do it. He is rewarded with popularity with the people.
Other politicians, on the other hand, spend their time building political alliances. While such networks are useful in securing the ticket of a political party to run for office, they do not guarantee popularity with the electorate.
Obi, knowing where his strength lies, was strategic to avoid a game that would be decided by political networks and move to where he he would be certain of a chance to present himself to the people on the ballot.
You do not tell a Messi in his prime to go play trials which are judged on discretionary bases. You would be a joke of a manager to do so. It is only in Nigeria that a club would say that it is determined to win the league but its coach would place an obstacle to hiring the best striker in the league.
Make yourself indispensable. That’s Obi’s style. It drives his opponents mad.
It should be a lesson to our young people. Rather than run around people for favors, develop yourself and make yourself indispensable by the competence, diligence and self confidence that you bring into every task that you have the opportunity to handle.
