A Nigerian woman identified as Chi has stirred reactions online after narrating her unexpected experience while working her first job in the United Kingdom as a pot washer in a luxury hotel kitchen.
According to Chi, she resumed the job with what she described as her “hardworking Naija spirit” and decided to complete a five-hour workload in just three hours so she could relax afterwards.
However, things reportedly did not go the way she expected.
She explained that shortly after sitting beside the dishwasher to rest and observe the chefs at work, a senior kitchen supervisor approached her with more assignments around the kitchen.
The extra tasks allegedly included:
- Replacing tissue rolls
- Refilling soaps
- Sweeping already clean floors
- Cleaning bin trolleys outside in the cold
Chi said the experience quickly taught her that many workplaces in the UK operate differently from what some Nigerians are used to.
According to her:
“I realised quickly that in the UK, if they pay you for six hours, they expect you to work for six hours.”
She further advised new immigrants to avoid standing idle during work hours because supervisors may immediately assign additional responsibilities.
Reactions Online
Her story triggered mixed reactions online, especially among Africans living abroad.
Some people agreed with her experience, saying many foreign workplaces value constant productivity and proper time management.
Others argued that working efficiently should not automatically lead to extra punishment or workload.
A few reactions included:
“That’s the reality abroad. Once you finish early, they believe you can handle more.”
“Naija strength met UK system.”
“Work smart, not just hard.”
“In many countries, you’re paid for your time, not only the task.”
