Nigerian Man Claims He Was Fired After Asking Female MD To Speak Respectfully

A Nigerian man has sparked conversations online after revealing how an encounter with a female Managing Director allegedly cost him his job.

Sharing his experience on X, the man identified as @jayhemzy claimed he was dismissed shortly after asking the MD to adjust the tone she used while addressing him.

According to him, he politely said:

“Respectfully Ma, please don’t talk to me in that tone.”

He alleged that shortly after the statement, a disciplinary committee was set up, and he was fired two days later.

While he did not disclose the full details of the exchange or the company involved, his post quickly gained traction online, with many Nigerians debating workplace culture, power dynamics, and respect in professional environments.

In his words:

“I was sacked after I told a Nigerian MD, ‘respectfully Ma, please don’t talk to me in that tone.’ They set up a disciplinary committee shortly after that statement, and sacked me 2 days later. These things fester because people are too cowardly.”

The post has since attracted mixed reactions from social media users.

One user, Wlan, wrote: “Nigerians are obsessed with respect and it’s always the people that haven’t done anything to earn it.”

Another user, Uche Omah, stated: “The day I told one of my senior colleagues in Ibadan to stop talking to me like that, two weeks later he hired an assassin to kill me who ended up killing my husband.”

Captain CEO commented: “A workplace that is based on disrespect is a toxic workplace. I don’t care about your position or role in the company.”

Kachi added: “Best thing to do once you saw the disciplinary committee setup is to resign or totally ghost them. Stop showing up, resign, abandon their job, and keep your skills.”
