Nigerian man blasts PalmPay over alleged harassment as loan recovery turns controversial

A Nigerian man has sparked widespread reactions online after publicly calling out digital lending platform PalmPay over what he described as aggressive loan recovery tactics.

In a viral rant, the man alleged that although he owes OPay ₦800,000 and only received standard reminder calls regarding his overdue balance, PalmPay reportedly began contacting individuals on his phone contact list just three days after his own loan became overdue.

He expressed frustration over the company’s alleged actions, accusing its staff of harassment and publicly warning them against further attempts to involve his personal contacts in the repayment process. According to him, such tactics were both embarrassing and unacceptable.

The man further declared that if any of his contacts continued receiving messages about his debt, he might completely abandon repayment and stop using the platform altogether.

His outburst has since fueled online debates about debt recovery practices among digital lenders in Nigeria, with many social media users discussing privacy concerns, borrower responsibility, and ethical boundaries in loan enforcement.

Reactions online:

“Contacting someone’s entire phonebook over a small delay is extreme.”

“Borrow money, pay back. But harassment shouldn’t be part of recovery.”

“This is why many people fear these loan apps.”

“Both borrowers and lenders need accountability.”
