A resident in Lagos has shared an uncomfortable experience involving her neighbour’s 19-year-old daughter, drawing attention to the sensitive balance between offering help and unintentionally offending someone.
According to the woman, the teenager had visited her home multiple times but often left behind a noticeable and unpleasant body odour, which raised concerns about her personal hygiene and possible future embarrassment.
Wanting to help, she decided to approach the matter gently.
“I started worrying that people might mock her in the future if nothing was done about it. So I asked her if she had ever heard of roll-on or antiperspirant,” she explained.
To her surprise, the teenager said she hadn’t, despite appearing modern and well-groomed.
The neighbour then offered her an antiperspirant and explained how to use it daily, pointing out that underarm hygiene is a common cause of body odour.
However, the attempt at guidance did not land well.
“I tried to be honest and told her she didn’t smell very nice. She looked offended and left shortly after,” the woman said.
By the next day, the once-friendly relationship had changed, as the teenager reportedly ignored her and refused to respond to greetings.
The incident has since sparked conversation around how best to handle sensitive personal issues like hygiene, especially when it involves young people, highlighting how easily good intentions can be misunderstood.
Reactions online:
“She meant well, but that ‘you don’t smell nice’ part is where everything went wrong.”
“Some things are better told through the parent, not directly to the child.”
“At 19 and she doesn’t know deodorant? That’s surprising but still, delivery matters.”
“This is why people mind their business these days.”
“She helped, but the honesty was too blunt for that kind of topic.”
“The girl might never visit that house again 😭”
