A Nigerian man has shared how a stranger earned his admiration after returning the full ₦1.8 million he mistakenly transferred to the person’s OPay account.
According to him, he initially feared the money was gone after repeatedly calling the recipient’s phone number, only to discover it was switched off. He said he had almost given up before deciding to try again about 30 minutes later.
When the recipient eventually answered, the man explained the mistake and pleaded for the money to be returned. As a token of appreciation, he even offered to let the stranger keep ₦100,000 before sending back the remaining balance.
Recounting the incident, he wrote:
“I sent 1.8m to someone’s OPay account by mistake. I called the number; it was switched off. I was already giving up. I called 30 minutes later, the person picked and I pleaded with him to return it. I said he should remove 100k and send the rest.”
To his surprise, the recipient returned the entire ₦1.8 million without deducting the ₦100,000 that had been offered.
The man added:
“He sent back 1.8m without removing anything from it. I sent him 150k without thinking twice.”
The story has since drawn praise from many social media users, with several describing the recipient’s action as a rare display of honesty. Others also applauded the sender for rewarding the stranger with ₦150,000, saying such gestures encourage integrity and goodwill in society.
