“JAMB Navigation Test” Comment Sparks Debate Over Students’ Readiness for University

A woman has triggered widespread reactions online after stating that a child who cannot independently find their way to a JAMB examination centre may not be ready for higher education.

Her comment, which quickly went viral, argued that basic independence and navigation skills are indicators of maturity required for tertiary institutions.

“If a child cannot confidently navigate their way to a JAMB centre on their own, it is a feedback that they are not ready for higher institution,” she said.

The statement has since divided opinion, with many users debating whether such expectations are realistic in Nigeria’s current environment.

Reactions

Supporting the view

Some users agreed that independence is an important life skill.

They argued that university life requires students to be self-reliant, especially when relocating away from home.

Others said early exposure to responsibilities helps build confidence and problem-solving ability.

Opposing the view

Many critics described the expectation as unrealistic given Nigeria’s challenges.

They pointed to insecurity, unfamiliar exam locations, and poor transport systems as major barriers.

Some argued that academic readiness should matter more than a student’s ability to navigate routes.

Neutral / Mixed opinions

A section of users felt both sides had valid points.

They agreed independence is important but said it should not be used as a benchmark for exam readiness.

Others suggested that parents still play a necessary role in ensuring candidates safely reach exam centres, especially minors.

Observers note that similar debates have surfaced in past UTME cycles, particularly when candidates missed exams due to logistics, last-minute centre changes, and transportation difficulties.
