Delta Community in Shock as Man Allegedly Kills Wife, Then Dies by Suicide in Oviri-Agbarho

A tragedy has reportedly struck Oviri-Agbarho in Delta State. A man identified as Tony allegedly killed his wife, identified as Excell, on Sunday evening, and then took his own life. The incident reportedly happened around Oviri-Agbarho and the 5 Junction area, leaving residents in shock and mourning.

What is known and what is not (the limits of the report)

The report says nothing about what led to the incident. We do not know whether there was a quarrel, a history of violence, or other pressures in the couple’s home. We also do not know who found them, or when the police arrived. Agbarho is in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, and the 5 Junction is a well-known spot in the town.

Similar cases and how they ended (past cases of killings followed by suicide)

Nigeria has recorded other cases of this kind. In January 2026, in Sotubo, Ogun State, a housewife, Ayobami Ganiyat Ayanwale, died after allegedly being stabbed at home in front of her children. Her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale, was later found unresponsive in an open field and was suspected to have taken his own life. A Source reported that he was described as a serial wife-beater. Police said the case had been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department, and the couple’s three children were placed in the care of relatives.

In February 2024 in Akure, Ondo State, police said a petroleum products dealer, Sesan Adelabu, allegedly killed his wife, Bolu, at their home and was then found dead. The Commissioner of Police ordered the homicide section to take over the case.

In these cases, there was no trial, because the suspect had died. That means the families and the public often never get a court ruling on what happened. The main outcomes were police investigations and children left without parents.

Warning signs that are often missed (what can lie behind such tragedies)

We do not know what happened in Oviri-Agbarho. In general, killings between partners can follow a history of abuse, a separation, money problems, jealousy or untreated mental illness. In the Ogun case, neighbours said there had been earlier beatings. Such signs are sometimes seen by relatives and neighbours but are not reported, because many people treat marital trouble as a private matter.

Silence also affects the person who may later turn to violence. Men in particular may avoid talking about stress, shame or despair, and may not seek help until a crisis.

A family and a town left grieving (effects)

Two lives have been lost, and two families are mourning. If there are children, they now face the loss of both parents at once, as the Ogun children did. Neighbours who knew the couple will also carry the shock.

Nationally, each case adds to concern about domestic violence and mental health, which Nigeria still handles with few services. The cost is borne by families, communities and police units who respond to such scenes.

Help that can come before a crisis (possible solutions)

Couples in conflict can speak to trusted relatives, religious leaders or counsellors early, before arguments turn violent. A person who is being abused should leave to a safe place and report to the police or a support agency. Neighbours should not ignore sounds of violence and can call the police.

Anyone struggling with despair or thoughts of ending their life should talk to someone they trust, or to a doctor or mental health professional, and should not wait. Communities can reduce stigma by treating mental distress as a health issue. Government can expand affordable counselling and mental health services, including in smaller towns, and make domestic violence reporting simpler and safer. Police can also share clear information on how to report threats.

Our reflection on this loss

We express our sympathy to both families and to the community of Oviri-Agbarho. Whatever the reason behind this tragedy, a woman has lost her life and a family has lost two members. We do not wish to guess what led to it, and we urge others not to do so either.

We hope the police will release a statement soon, and that relatives will be given the support they need. If there are children, their welfare should come first. We also hope that this case will remind readers to check on neighbours and relatives who seem troubled, and to encourage anyone in distress to seek help early. If you or someone you know is struggling, please speak to a trusted person or a mental health professional.
