Jonathan’s Remark on Nigeria’s History Sparks Reactions

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has sparked reactions after speaking about the need to preserve the history of individuals he believes contributed to Nigeria’s challenges.

Jonathan said there may come a time when two large buildings would be established in Abuja to display photographs of people—both living and dead—who played roles in the country’s problems.

According to him, such a move would help future generations understand the actions of their forebears and the impact those actions had on Nigeria.

One day, we will have two big buildings in Abuja where we will put pictures of people, whether dead or alive, who have messed up this country so that their grandchildren will know their forefathers were part of Nigeria’s problems.”

The former president said future generations deserve to know the identities of those who contributed to the country’s difficulties.

His remark has since generated conversations among Nigerians online, with many sharing different opinions on accountability, governance and the importance of preserving historical records.

While some commenters agreed that leaders and influential figures should be held accountable for their actions, others argued that defining responsibility for Nigeria’s challenges may be more complicated.

The statement continues to fuel discussions around leadership, national development and the lessons future generations should inherit.

Reactions:

“History will eventually expose everyone.”

“The building should include every leader who contributed to Nigeria’s problems.”

“Accountability should not only be for the past; it should start now.”

“Nigeria needs records like this so future generations can learn.”
