A lady has sparked discussion online after sharing how a landlord allegedly ended up paying ₦100,000 after reporting a tenant to the police over a broken padlock.
According to the story, the tenant was preparing for a job interview and needed to leave the compound around 6 a.m. The landlord reportedly refused to open the gate, insisting it would remain locked until 7 a.m. despite the tenant’s pleas.
Faced with the risk of missing the interview, the tenant allegedly broke the padlock and left for the appointment.
Later, the landlord returned with police officers, accusing the tenant of damaging the lock. However, when officers questioned residents, they were reportedly told that the tenant had not slept in the compound the previous night and that the landlord’s son was responsible for breaking the padlock.
The revelation allegedly prompted the officers to challenge the landlord’s account of events. Before leaving, the landlord was said to have paid ₦100,000 for wasting police time.
The story has since triggered debate online, with many Nigerians discussing landlords’ rules, tenants’ rights, and whether preventing a tenant from leaving a compound is justified.
