Labour Party Endorses Chibuzo Okereke as 2027 Presidential Candidate

The Labour Party has formally endorsed Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections following what the party described as a broad-based consensus among members and stakeholders during a meeting held in Abuja on May 30, 2026.

Speaking after his emergence, Okereke called on Nigerians to rebuild their confidence in the nation, stressing that governance—not politics—should be the central purpose of leadership.

“Politics should not be the purpose of government; governance should be the purpose of government.”

According to him, effective leadership must focus on improving citizens’ welfare through enhanced security, economic growth, social development, and renewed trust in public institutions.

Okereke argued that government policies should place the dignity and prosperity of Nigerians at the forefront, insisting that national progress is only possible when citizens are empowered to succeed.

“We believe that when Nigerians succeed, Nigeria prospers. People and governance must come before politics.”

He also expressed concern over what he described as a growing crisis of confidence in the country, noting that many Nigerians have lost faith in government institutions, meritocracy, and the nation’s future.

“Nigeria faces not just economic, security, and institutional issues, but also a crisis of confidence. Millions of Nigerians have lost faith in their country’s future.”

The Labour Party flagbearer maintained that Nigeria’s greatest asset is its people rather than its natural resources, emphasizing that democracy must deliver opportunity, dignity, and happiness to citizens.

Okereke pledged that, if elected, his administration would prioritize education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, energy, and economic productivity while creating opportunities for sustainable development.

He acknowledged the country’s pressing challenges, including rising living costs, unemployment, insecurity, declining purchasing power, inadequate infrastructure, energy shortages, high maternal and infant mortality rates, and the growing number of out-of-school children.

Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism that strategic reforms, targeted investments, and people-centered governance could transform Nigeria’s fortunes.

“These are real problems, but they also present real opportunities for transformative solutions and sustainable development.”
