Nigerian Postgraduate Recounts Awkward Reunion With Woman Who Once Rejected Him Over Academic Status

A Nigerian postgraduate student has shared how an unexpected roadside encounter in Lagos after a Sunday church service reopened memories of a romantic rejection from his undergraduate years.

According to the man, he recently crossed paths with a woman who had turned down his advances while they were both at university. At the time, he was a 200-level student, while she was in her final year.

He explained that although the woman admitted she liked him, she declined to pursue a relationship because she was uncomfortable dating a junior coursemate.

“She told me she liked me but said I needed to graduate first. She made it clear she couldn’t date a junior coursemate, so I respected her decision and moved on quietly.”

The student said he accepted her decision and focused on his studies. By the time he graduated, she had already advanced academically and was pursuing higher qualifications.

According to him, they remained in touch for a while, but communication gradually faded after she completed her master’s degree, and they eventually lost contact altogether.

Years later, fate brought them together again when he was driving home from church. During their conversation, he said the woman appeared surprised by how much he had progressed since their university days.

He recalled that she remarked:

“You’re a big boy now. I think I can consider you.”

The comment caught him off guard, prompting a response he described as both polite and pointed.

“I smiled and told her I wasn’t done with my master’s yet.”

The story has sparked debate online, with many Nigerians discussing whether academic status, social standing, or career progression should influence romantic decisions.

While some viewed the encounter as a reminder that timing can significantly affect relationships, others argued that personal qualities and compatibility should matter more than educational hierarchy.

Reactions

“She rejected him because of status then. Now the status has changed.”

“His response was calm but carried a strong message.”

“There’s nothing wrong with preferences, but people should be ready for the consequences of those choices.”

“Timing matters in relationships. Sometimes people meet the right person at the wrong stage of life.”

“The master’s degree reply was a clever way of reminding her why things never happened in the first place.”
