Doctor Sparks Debate After Charging Landlord ₦10k Consultation Fee Following 100% Rent Hike

A medical professional has sparked heated reactions online after sharing how a sharp rent increase by her landlord led her to stop offering him free medical consultations.

According to the woman, she has lived in the same compound since 2021 and had regularly provided free medical advice and informal treatment to her landlord, his family, and even their friends whenever health concerns arose.

However, things reportedly changed in December 2025 when her landlord increased her rent by 100%, placing significant financial pressure on her.

In her words:

“My landlord increased my rent by 100% last December. I’ve been in this compound since 2021. As a medical personnel, I’ve always helped him, his family and even their friends for free whenever they had any health concerns.”

She explained that the issue escalated when the landlord contacted her again for medical assistance, but this time she informed him that her consultation fee was ₦10,000.

“This morning, he messaged me about a medical issue. I told him consultation is ₦10k. He called, shocked, asking when I started charging. I told him I need money to pay the new rent, so I can’t keep doing it for free. He got angry and ended the call. Abeg, did I do anything wrong?”

Her story has since triggered widespread debate, with many Nigerians divided over whether she was justified in charging for her professional services after the substantial rent increase.

The situation also highlights the broader economic realities many tenants face, as soaring rental prices continue to reshape relationships and informal support systems.

Social media reactions:

Landlord increased rent without pity, now he wants free treatment? Life no balance like that.”

“She’s absolutely right. Professional service is not family inheritance.”

“If he can double rent, he can afford ₦10k consultation.”

“Some people mistake kindness for obligation.”

“Her landlord wanted premium healthcare on old rent terms.”

“This is why boundaries are important, especially when money enters the equation.”

“She did nothing wrong. Free service is a choice, not a lifetime contract.”

“The landlord upgraded rent, so she upgraded her charges too.”
