Benin City, Edo State – A 52-year-old woman, Titilayo Akindele, has died after collapsing during court proceedings following her arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over alleged drug offences.
Arrest and Trial
Akindele was reportedly arrested for selling “loud,” a potent variant of cannabis, and was standing trial when the incident occurred. Despite being granted bail by the court, she reportedly remained in NDLEA custody, raising concerns about compliance with judicial orders.
Health Concerns Ignored
Accounts surrounding the case indicate that Akindele had repeatedly complained of ill health, both in court and directly to the NDLEA, requesting medical attention. Her family reportedly offered financial support to facilitate her treatment, but these appeals were allegedly not acted upon.
Tragic Collapse in Court
The situation took a tragic turn when Akindele collapsed during a court sitting and was confirmed dead shortly after.
Public Debate and Detention Practices
The incident has reignited discussions on detainee welfare, access to healthcare, and adherence to bail conditions by law enforcement agencies. Similar concerns were previously raised in 2023, when reports emerged of suspects allegedly denied adequate medical care while in custody, prompting calls for reforms and stronger oversight of security agencies.
Official Response
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
