Woman Dies After Allegedly Breaking Husband’s Cultural Tradition in Benue

A Nigerian lady’s warning about the importance of understanding a partner’s cultural background before marriage has sparked widespread reactions online. She shared a tragic story involving a neighbour who allegedly died after violating a traditional belief.

📍 The Incident

According to the post on X (formerly Twitter), the incident involved a married woman whose husband is from Orokam in Benue State. The community holds strong beliefs tied to a spiritual force known as Alekwu.

The woman reportedly fell ill after committing adultery, which allegedly violated the cultural rule that married women must remain faithful to their husbands. The tradition dictates that any married woman who breaks this rule would be punished by Alekwu.

The poster wrote:

Before you marry someone, please know their tradition. We just lost a neighbor because of her husband’s tradition.”

She further claimed that the woman’s illness was incurable and that the husband appeared indifferent after her death.

🌐 Social Media Reactions

The post drew mixed reactions, with users commenting on culture, marriage, and personal responsibility.

1. Importance of Cultural Awareness

Temmi: “That is why it is very important you know the family you are getting married to; everything is not love, not even with someone that really believes in their culture.”

Bratva: “You should learn about your husband’s tradition, have self-respect, dignity, and respect for your marriage.”

2. Traditions vs. Human Safety

TheRave: “That’s a tragic story. If true, it highlights how dangerous it can be when harmful traditions override basic human safety and rights. No cultural practice should ever cost someone their life.”

3. Focus on Infidelity

Jobby: “If the rule is simply ‘don’t sleep with anyone except your husband,’ that’s literally the basic expectation of marriage everywhere. The real mystery is why people are debating tradition instead of adultery.”

Big G: “I don’t support the tradition or her death, but she obviously brought it on herself. Too sad.”

4. Regional Strictness

Fresh Boi:All this Benue, Kogi—dem don’t play with these things. You must not argue with elders or cheat; it’s death straight.”
