A Nigerian man has ignited mixed reactions online after sharing an uncomfortable experience involving his friend’s wife and the strict boundaries he maintains when visiting their home.
According to the man, his friend’s wife recently complained that she feels embarrassed whenever he comes around because of how he behaves during conversations with her husband.
He explained that whenever he is having a discussion with his friend and the wife joins them, he immediately changes the topic, stops talking altogether, or finds an excuse to excuse himself.
Clarifying his actions, the man stressed that his behaviour has nothing to do with disrespect or dislike. Instead, he said it is a deliberate effort to maintain boundaries and show respect to his friend and his marriage.
In his words:
*“My friend’s wife is not my friend. The only thing that holds me and her together is greeting. Just because you are my friend doesn’t make your wife my friend.
Anytime she wants to join our conversation, I stop talking or leave. I’m not embarrassing her. I’m respecting my friend. I know my place. It’s boundary and discipline.”*
He added that he sees no reason to become overly familiar with his friend’s wife, noting that excessive closeness between friends and their spouses often leads to disrespect and unnecessary complications.
However, the woman reportedly interprets his actions as awkward and embarrassing, saying she feels deliberately excluded whenever he withdraws from conversations in her presence.
The story has since sparked heated debates on social media, with opinions sharply divided.
While some users praised the man for his discipline, others felt his approach was extreme.
One commenter wrote, “This man actually has sense. Boundaries save friendships and marriages.”
Another added, “If he was freely chatting with her, the same people would complain.”
Others, however, argued that basic conversation does not automatically imply disrespect and that his actions could come off as unnecessarily cold.
