A Nigerian pastor has ignited intense reactions on social media after delivering a blunt sermon on relationships, breakups, and gifts exchanged between romantic partners.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @ChukEricE, the cleric addressed his congregation while recounting a story involving a woman and her ex-boyfriend. According to the pastor, the man had set up a shop for the woman during their relationship but took it back after they broke up — a move the pastor firmly defended.
He insisted that the man was not wicked for reclaiming what he paid for, arguing that benefits tied to a relationship should end once the relationship itself ends.
“How can your boyfriend buy a car for you and you say you will not date again and still keep the car? You are a thief,” the pastor declared.
Doubling down on his stance, the cleric explained that items acquired during a relationship are not ordinary gifts but benefits attached to a role. He described them as “official properties” linked to what he termed the office of a girlfriend.
“It’s an official car. It’s for the office of a girlfriend. When you leave the office, you leave the wig, the iPhone, the car, the shoe, the house and go back to your father’s house,” he added.
The sermon has since sharply divided Nigerians online.
Supporters of the pastor argue that it is unfair for someone to keep expensive items received during a relationship that has ended, especially when those items were provided with clear expectations. Others, however, slammed the cleric for promoting control, entitlement, and unhealthy power dynamics in relationships.
Reacting online, one user questioned the pastor’s logic, asking, “So if a woman buys a man a phone or supports him, will she also collect it back?” Another disagreed outright, stating, “A gift is a gift. Once you give it, it’s no longer yours.”
As the debate continues, the sermon has once again highlighted the deep divide in opinions around love, money, and accountability in modern relationships.
