Ekpoma on Edge: 52 AAU Students Remanded After Protest Against Kidnapping Surge

Tension has gripped Ekpoma following the remand of 52 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) over their alleged involvement in a protest against the rising tide of kidnappings and insecurity in the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to reports obtained from Ijeomadiary, the students were arrested late at night from multiple hostels across Ekpoma after a demonstration held last Saturday. The protest was intended to highlight the worsening security situation, with residents claiming that several individuals had been abducted directly from their homes.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, some students described the arrests as a coordinated raid, alleging that police officers stormed several hostels in the middle of the night, detaining students indiscriminately.

After their arrest, the students were arraigned in court and subsequently remanded in prison custody for 14 days.

The incident has escalated tensions within the AAU community, raising concerns not only over the security challenges in Ekpoma but also over the treatment of students who speak out against them.
