Worker Sparks Debate After Salary Was Increased Only When He Resigned

A viral social media post has ignited conversations about employee welfare after a worker revealed that his employer only offered him a salary increase after he submitted his resignation letter.

According to the employee, he spent more than two years earning ₦80,000 monthly while also working overtime without additional compensation. Despite repeatedly requesting a pay raise during that period, he claimed his appeals were ignored.

The situation reportedly changed when he secured a new job offering ₦120,000 and handed in his resignation. Upon receiving the letter, his boss allegedly questioned his decision to leave and immediately offered to match the salary at his new workplace in an attempt to retain him.

Rather than negotiate, the employee said he completed his notice period and left on good terms.

His story has resonated with many workers online, with several people arguing that employers often fail to appreciate staff until they are about to leave. Others maintained that businesses sometimes only realize an employee’s market value when faced with the prospect of replacing them.

The incident has reignited discussions about fair compensation, employee recognition, and why some organizations wait until resignation before addressing long-standing concerns.
