“We Kept Church Free for 15 Years” — Nigerian Lady Calls Out RCCG, Sparks Online Debate

A Nigerian lady has sparked widespread reactions on social media after accusing the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) of allegedly taking advantage of her family’s generosity.

Sharing her story on X (formerly Twitter) via @D_goodybag, she claimed that her father allowed the church to operate on his property for about 15 years without paying rent, and also supported them with equipment and other resources to keep the church running smoothly.

According to her, tensions began when her father was later considered for a pastoral position, but the process reportedly changed after the church questioned his family’s membership status. She alleged that despite his long-standing support, he was eventually overlooked for the role.

The situation escalated when she claimed that her family felt used and unappreciated, leading her and her younger brother to reportedly remove the church’s belongings from the property at night.

She wrote in part that her father had even considered handing over documents of the property during discussions about pastoral training, but later felt disappointed by how things turned out.

💬 Reactions Trail the Allegation Online

The story quickly triggered heated debates, with Nigerians sharing divided opinions:

🔹 Support for the family Some users sympathised with the lady, arguing that long-term generosity should not be ignored.

“If truly they stayed there for 15 years free, the least they could do is show appreciation. That’s painful.”

“Church or not, people should not take kindness for granted like this.”

🔹 Defence of the church Others defended RCCG, saying pastoral appointments are spiritual decisions, not rewards for contributions.

Giving land or money doesn’t automatically qualify anyone to become a pastor. Calling is not transactional.”

The church may appreciate him, but leadership selection follows doctrine, not donations.”

🔹 Calls for caution A number of users urged the public not to jump to conclusions based on one side of the story.

We are hearing only one version. These matters are usually deeper than social media posts.”

Family and church disputes are complex. Let’s not rush to judge.”

🔹 Wider conversation The controversy also reignited discussions about:

  • transparency in religious organisations
  • boundaries between generosity and entitlement
  • expectations of recognition within churches

Overall, the incident has divided opinion online, with some seeing it as a case of unappreciated sacrifice, while others view it as a misunderstanding of spiritual leadership processes.
