“From Brutal Witchcraft Attack to University Graduate: Asuquo Edet’s 13-Year Journey of Survival and Triumph”

A Nigerian man, Asuquo Edet, has graduated from Akwa Ibom State University, 13 years after surviving a near-fatal attack triggered by accusations of witchcraft.

The shocking incident occurred in 2014 in Udung Uko Local Government Area, where he was reportedly beaten and abandoned by relatives who blamed him for his father’s illness and eventual death. Left for dead in the bush, his survival marked the beginning of a long and painful journey to recovery.

His life took a turning point when Danish humanitarian Anja Ringgren Lovén and her husband found and rescued him. They provided urgent medical care, rehabilitation, and access to education, helping him rebuild his life from scratch.

Now in 2026, Asuquo has earned a degree in Genetics and Biotechnology, a milestone that has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians describing his story as a powerful symbol of resilience, hope, and second chances.

Recounting his journey, Lovén shared that he was one of the first children they rescued upon arriving in Nigeria over a decade ago. She described him as severely injured at the time but determined to live and grow beyond his circumstances.

From being left for dead in the bush to earning a degree, Asuquo has shown the world what strength truly means,” she said, praising his compassion and intelligence.

His story also highlights the ongoing issue of harmful witchcraft accusations in parts of Nigeria. Following similar cases in 2016 across Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, authorities and organizations intensified advocacy efforts to protect vulnerable individuals, especially children, from such abuses.

Today, Asuquo Edet stands not just as a survivor, but as an inspiration—proof that even in the face of extreme cruelty, hope can prevail.
