Peter Obi Criticises FG Over Oyo School Abduction, Calls for Stronger Leadership

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government’s response to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the handling of the incident as inadequate and concerning.

Speaking during an interview, Obi argued that the government has not demonstrated the level of urgency and commitment required to secure the victims’ release. He maintained that the seriousness of the incident warranted direct involvement from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to Obi, the President should have personally led the delegation sent to address the crisis.

President should have led the delegation to Oyo. I don’t think the Nigerian government is showing enough commitment to the rescue of the kidnapped Oyo school children and teachers, and it is very worrisome,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor also compared the current security situation with previous administrations, noting that school abductions have continued despite widespread public outrage over similar incidents in the past.

Obi referenced the international reaction to a major school abduction during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, which attracted global condemnation and intensified calls for action.

He further compared the security records of the administrations of former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Tinubu, arguing that the situation has deteriorated.

Under former President Buhari, in eight years, there were 10 school abductions. Under the present government, in three years, it has already surpassed,” Obi claimed.

The Labour Party leader stressed that stronger leadership, greater commitment, and more decisive action are needed to tackle Nigeria’s growing security challenges and prevent further attacks on schools and communities.

The remarks have sparked renewed debate over the country’s security strategy and the government’s response to kidnapping incidents across Nigeria.
