Nigerian Lady Cries Out as Younger Brother Allegedly Remains in Kirikiri Prison Since 2023 Despite No Conviction

A Nigerian woman, Tosin, has made an emotional public appeal over the prolonged detention of her younger brother, who she says has remained in custody since 2023 after being caught up in a police raid.

According to her account, her brother was arrested alongside others during the operation, but while the other individuals were eventually released, he was allegedly transferred to Kirikiri Medium Prison in Lagos and has continued to face court appearances without conviction.

Tosin stated that the matter is currently before the Ikeja High Court, but repeated adjournments over several years have delayed any resolution. She further claimed that even the arresting officer reportedly testified that her brother committed no offence, yet his detention has continued.

The family’s situation is made more difficult by financial hardship, as Tosin explained they were asked to provide ₦150,000 for bail but have been unable to do so. She also noted that both parents are deceased, leaving them without support.

Her plea has triggered widespread concern online, with many Nigerians questioning the legal process, the repeated delays, and the broader issue of prolonged detention without timely justice.

The case has added to ongoing public conversations around judicial delays, access to legal representation, and the welfare of minors or vulnerable individuals caught in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

Here are some of the reactions the story has generated online:

“This is exactly what is wrong with our justice system. 3 years without conviction is injustice.”

“How can a minor be in prison since 2023? Where is Legal Aid Council / human rights groups?”

“Police will just pick people randomly and move on, but the innocent will suffer.”

“₦150k bail for an orphaned family? This country is not serious.”

“Court adjournment from 2023 to 2026 is a failure of the judiciary.”

“Even the arresting officer said he did nothing, so why is he still there?”

“This is why people lose faith in Nigeria’s justice system.”

“If this story is true, someone needs to intervene immediately.”
