Homeowner Sparks Debate After Painters Allegedly Took Leftover Paint Worth Thousands

A lady has raised concerns after painters she hired allegedly carted away unused paint purchased for her three-bedroom flat, insisting it belonged to them after completing the job.

According to her, the incident happened in April 2026 after she bought 15 buckets of paint at ₦30,000 each, spending a total of ₦450,000 based on the painters’ estimate.

She explained that although the painters completed the work, not all the paint was used during the project.

The woman said she only realised what was happening when the workers were preparing to leave and had already loaded the remaining paint buckets into their vehicle.

When I saw them packing the remaining paint, I asked why they were taking it. They told me the paint belonged to them because they had delivered their work and that I wouldn’t be needing it anymore,” she recounted.

According to her, the painters argued that the leftover paint would eventually spoil if left behind, claiming they were justified in taking it away.

“I felt cheated and confused because I paid for every bucket myself. If I bought it, how does it suddenly stop being mine just because the job is done?” she added.

The lady also referenced a similar experience from 2023, when a neighbour reportedly complained about artisans removing leftover building materials after a renovation project, an issue she said was never properly resolved.

The incident has since sparked conversations online, with many homeowners debating whether unused materials purchased by clients should remain the property of the customer or the artisans handling the work.

Others argued that clearer agreements and written contracts are necessary to avoid misunderstandings during home improvement projects.

Reactions

Some social media users shared their opinions on the incident.

“If na me, nobody is leaving that compound with my paint. I paid for it with my money.”

“Artisans need to stop normalising this behavior. Leftover materials belong to the owner unless agreed otherwise.”

“Why would they assume she doesn’t need the remaining paint again? What if she wants it for future touch-ups?”
