Fourteen worshippers abducted during a night vigil at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, have regained their freedom after more than 67 days in captivity. However, one victim, a woman, died while in the kidnappers’ custody.
The victims were abducted on April 28, 2026, when gunmen stormed the church during an evening service, killing the presiding pastor before dragging 16 worshippers — including women, young children, and an elderly woman — into the forest. The abductors initially demanded a ₦1 billion ransom, later reducing it to ₦50 million, though community members reportedly raised and paid smaller sums along the way without securing the victims’ release.
The remaining captives were freed in the early hours of Saturday and were taken first to a general hospital before being transferred to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) for further medical evaluation and treatment. Local officials described their condition as critical, noting that several could not walk and had gone without food for over a week.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the release, attributing it to sustained intelligence-led operations involving the police, military, Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and the state government. Authorities say efforts to arrest those responsible are ongoing.
