Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore will remain in custody until at least June 30, after a Federal High Court in Abuja fixed the date to rule on his application seeking the restoration of his bail.
The court, presided over by Justice Mohammed Umar, adjourned the matter on Wednesday after both the defence and prosecution adopted their respective processes in the application.
Sowore is asking the court to restore his bail and set aside the bench warrant issued against him after he failed to appear for his trial over allegations of cybercrime and criminal defamation.
The Department of State Services is prosecuting the activist over allegations that he referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal” in posts shared on his X, formerly Twitter, and Facebook accounts.
Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court had earlier revoked his bail on June 16 and issued a warrant for his arrest. On Monday, it ordered that he be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his application challenging the bail revocation.
The case has continued to draw attention from supporters and political observers, with many awaiting the court’s decision.
With June 30 now fixed for ruling, attention remains on the court as Sowore continues his legal battle from custody.
