A Nigerian woman has criticised her landlord for raising her rent from 1.2 million Nigerian Naira to 1.8 million Nigerian Naira, despite the country’s dire economic circumstances.
A post on the well-known social media network X (formerly Twitter) disclosed this.
The woman bemoaned in the post that her landlord is not taking the already intolerable economic hardship in Nigeria into account by raising the rent by a significant amount.
She wrote: “They’ve increased my rent today. I just got back from the market and found out my rent has been raised from ₦1.2 million to ₦1.8 million.”
“Is that not too much? Nigeria is already hard enough, people are just trying to survive. What is happening, landlord? Nobody is considering anybody; everybody wants to kill everybody.”
She further noted that the rent increment letter stated the rent was previously ₦1 million, whereas she had been paying ₦1.2 million for the past two years.
“Is it a mistake? I’ve been paying ₦1.2 million, which is an extra ₦600,000. Now it’s going up to ₦1.8 million?” she questioned.
