The singer accused the label of betraying his trust, mismanaging his money, and failing to support his development as an artist in a statement released on Wednesday.
He also criticized the music industry’s exploitation of artists, relating his own experience to a wider structural issue.
“My contracts with Dvpper Digital and Dapper Music are formally coming to an end. I did not make this decision lightly, but I had to after my rights as an artist were ignored, my finances were mismanaged, and my trust was betrayed,” he said.
“This goes beyond me alone. It concerns all artists and creators who put their all into their work only to have those who ought to be protecting them betray and take advantage of them. It is about advocating for justice, honesty, and the decency that we all merit.
They put their own profits ahead of my development, endangering my career and aspirations in the process. Dapper Music and Entertainment Limited will receive an advance from Dvpper Digital Limited, a distributor, under my name and catalog, but Dapper Music and Entertainment Limited will keep wasting the money without my knowledge or consent. We have not even been able to determine the magnitude of the debt that has now accumulated”
Shallipopi’s departure follows a similar move by Seyi Vibez, another Nigerian artiste, who also parted ways with Dapper Music earlier this year.
