Corruption in Nigeria

Some of us pray hard and work hard for this country to do better and earn respect in the world. Some others just sit in their homes and plot how they would bury the country deeper in the mud.

Just contrast the two pictures. The one on your left is that of a man accused of looting the State he governed of N110 billion. He became a fugitive from justice. For a long time he evaded and resisted arrest. On one occasion, his security or those guarding him exchanged gun fire with the nations’ security forces and the latter had to withdraw. They finally got him or so they claimed. Look at him walking gingerly like a rock star into the court room. You would think he was going to receive a national award.

Look to your right. That is the picture of a man whose singular offence is denouncing corruption in a book. You see him in handcuffs. This is not a good optic for Nigeria. Does it mean that we are now totally without shame in this country? The point of Dele’s book is the we have a corrupt criminal justice system. The book has become a world best seller.

We are not responding to the situation with sobriety. We are rather flaunting our embrace of criminality and persecution of those who dare to challenge it.
