Protesters have taken to the streets of Ibadan, Oyo state, to protest the scarcity of the new naira and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ban on the old N500 and N1000 notes.
According to reports, the protest started on Iwo Road, where gunshots were heard, and has since spread to other parts of Ibadan.
People are seen running for their lives at the sound of gunshots in a video shared on Twitter by @Ibadantwitta_, as traffic holds vehicular movement in parts of the state.
This follows a nationwide protest that began in the early hours of Friday morning in response to the president, Major General Mohammadu Buhari’s, Thursday morning broadcast in which he stated that only the old N200 remained legal tender until April 10.
Protests against the rule have erupted in Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers states so far.
