Ini Edo loses legal dispute with Chinenye Nworah over “Shanty Town” ownership.

Filmmaker Chinenye Nworah has defeated Nollywood actress Ini Edo in her attempt to obtain ownership of the popular Netflix series “Shanty Town.”

Nworah and GCM were the target of a legal challenge brought by Ini Edo and her business, Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP), in January 2024. They filed a double intellectual property petition.

The petition aimed to claim ownership of the copyrights and trademarks connected to the well-known series.

Nonetheless, Ini Edo has been found in violation by the Nigerian Trademark Registry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

The authorities dismissed the petition as frivolous and lacking in merit. Additionally, the NCC turned down a request from Edo and MEP to revoke two copyright certificates that had been given to Nworah for the film “Shanty Town”: one for the audiovisual work (Certificate Number CF1448) and another for the literary work (Certificate Number LW10177).

In response to the ruling, Nworah’s lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, stated: “The successful defense of these claims highlights the importance of protecting creative works and ensuring fair compensation for artists.”
