The first female SUG president of UNICAL defends the appointment of fifty aides.

The first female president of the University of Calabar’s Student Union Government, Blessing Alims, discusses why she decided to bring on 50 assistants as soon as she assumed the position.

The news spread quickly when it was reported that she appointed 50 aides.

Alims responded to the comments made regarding these appointments on the internet via her press secretary, Madueke Chinenye.

She made it clear that her goals are to maintain efficient governance and pay attention to the needs of the University of Calabar’s sizable student body, which is made up of over 42,000 students spread across 20 faculties and 110 departments.

“The Students’ Union Government is tasked with ensuring the welfare and progress of our entire university community,” she stated. In the same way that one tree does not constitute a forest, cooperative work is necessary for efficient administration of a student body of more than 42,000. It is essential to have a strong and diverse team to implement our initiatives successfully.”

Alims emphasized that there is no monetary compensation for the voluntary, unpaid roles. This demonstrates her commitment to uniting individuals who share her goals for the expansion of the university.

“They are designed to foster career development, instilling a sense of duty and motivation in the appointees. Each assistant took an oath of office, passed a stringent screening procedure conducted by the Senate Committee, and expressed a strong desire to provide their expertise and originality to the administration,” she continued.
