FIFA announced on Wednesday that it would launch an investigation into racist taunts made by Argentina’s players following their Copa America victory.
“FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into. FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone including players, fans and officials,” a spokesperson for world football’s governing body said.
Following Chelsea’s Copa victory over Colombia in Miami on Sunday, midfielder Enzo Fernandez of Argentina and Chelsea captured the chants on camera and shared them on social media from the team bus.
A chant from Argentina’s victory over France in the 2022 World Cup final is sung by a few players, including Fernandez.
The song contains homophobic remarks and criticizes Kylian Mbappe, the star striker for France.
Regarding the chants, FIFA has received a complaint from the French Football Federation.
In response to the incident, Fernandez was subject to an internal disciplinary procedure, which Chelsea had earlier announced.
Fernandez, who is the most expensive transfer in Premier League history, has apologised.
The club said in a statement: “Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable.
“We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.
“There will be an internal disciplinary procedure initiated by the Club.”
