Human Trafficking: Anambra couple arrested for allegedly Selling their baby girl for N1 million

A couple and an accomplice are being turned over to the police by the Anambra State government, acting through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, for suspected human trafficking in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area.

The couple, identified as Temple and Ndubuisi Nwankwo, were arrested by the police alongside one Ebere while attempting to sell their baby girl for N1million.

The couple allegedly claimed that their other two children had died, but it was suspected that they had sold them.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the media aide to the Women Affairs Commissioner, Chidinma lkeanyionwu, the government said the arrests followed a detailed investigation by the community chairman, Mr. Arinzechukwu Azodo, who notified the Women Affairs Commissioner, Ify Obinabo.

“Mr. Azodo was alerted by his team commander about a report of suspected trafficking occurring in the community,” the statement stated. “He promptly notified the commissioner, who instructed him to proceed and apprehend the individuals involved.”

According to Azodo, following the arrest, it was found that the aforementioned suspects were close to finalizing a one million naira deal.

On her part, one of the suspects who gave her name as Ebere from Ukpo in same local government area of the state, revealed that it was another of the suspect by name Temple Nwankwo, her very good friend that approached her one day informing her that she has twin babies for sale although she had already sold one of the twins.

Ebere stated that she agreed to collaborate with her and even went so far as to introduce her to a potential buyer in need of a male child right away.
